Nightlife and Halloween in Kyoto

I’ve spent a bit of time in Kyoto quite a few times this and last year and last and thought it’d be a great spot to spend Halloween with a couple friends.

"Where The Wild Things Are" is a shitty book...even for kids...

Even Michael Puckett might agree! (I haven’t asked him yet though, so I’m not sure).

Koyasan

Last Friday, on a whim, I decided to take a train down to the head of a 23km trail that would take myself and two friends to the town of Koya, the heart of a sect of Buddhism called Shingon.

It really happened! I’m still in shock but it happened… My roommate is collecting newspapers and putting them into a scrapbook…

All my life I’ve been told I could do whatever I wanted and be whatever I wanted. I wonder what would’ve happened back in the day if were to say, “I want to be President”. I can take a wild guess and say my whole damn family would have looked at me crazy and laughed.

This is no longer a laughing matter… It’s real. It happened and I’m still in shock. I remember a time when my parents use to say, “I highly doubt I’ll live to see the day a black man is president, the world isn’t ready for that much change.” Needless to say both of my parents were shocked!

Do you all realize that we, as a country, made history last night?! We finally have a democrat back in office! As soon as it was announced that Obama had won the presidency some students near PFT, Bemis and Barnes gathered outside and celebrated. According to the Herald some fire alarms were pulled and someone shouted, “OBAMA ALARM”! People were out dancing, singing, some were even crying. This is a great time in history and I am so thankful that I got to live to see it. But most importantly I am so thankful that my 84 year old grandmothers got to live to see a black man become president. I called my one grandmother to tell her it happened but she already knew, she said, “BABY I CAN’T BELIEVE I LIVED TO SEE THIS, I THOUGHT I WOULD BE DEAD AND GONE. BUT I LIVED TO SEE THIS WORLD CHANGE. DON’T YOU EVER FORGET THIS DAY, YOU HEAR, DON’T YOU EVER FORGET THIS DAY,” And she erupted into tears, I teared up as well. It wasn’t until I heard Obama give his speech that the tears actually fell. We have come a long way, but this is only the beginning.

I AM SO PROUD TO BE ABLE TO TELL MY SISTER, BROTHERS, NIECES, NEPHEWS, COUSINS, AND MY OWN CHILDREN ONE DAY THE TRUTH. THAT YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO! IF YOU HAVE A DREAM, FOLLOW IT! IT IS POSSIBLE! THAT WAS MADE INTO A REALISTIC GOAL ON NOVEMEBER 4TH.
AN AFRICAN AMERICAN MAN JUST ACHIEVED THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF LEADERSHIP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE FEELING!

Monique,

This blog is so important and so true—thank you for writing this. It’s one of those times I’m proud to be an American.
